The new sportsbook at Island Resort and Casino in Harris opened Thursday prior to the NFL Thursday night football game. The casino is the first in the Upper Peninsula to open an onsite sportsbook, and the ninth in the state to open.
Sports bets can be placed in the T.McC's Sports Bar inside the casino. Tony Mancilla, Island Resort and Casino general manager, expects to draw sports fans from a wide geography including Wisconsin.
'The Green Bay market is a big sports market and we will be the closest to them. I think it will have a big effect with traffic and people who want to bet on the NFL. It's exciting in that sense, and for the U.P. with having the largest market here. A sportsbook is something people have been asking for.'
- Tony Mancilla, Island Resort and Casino general manager

Island Resort and Casino in Michigan is reopening today after voluntarily closing March 21 to slow the spread of COVID-19. Although the reopening is opposed by Gov. Whitmer, the casino is located on the sovereign reservation land of the Hannahville Indian Community and is not subject to executive orders or state regulation.
Island Resort and Casino will open in phases beginning with slots and bingo plus limited food service. Later this month the hotel and golf course will reopen. Additional features will open at later dates.
To ensure the safety of customers and employees, new health and cleaning procedures will be implemented. At each entrance a worker will check the temperature of customers and employees as they enter. No one with a temperature over 100 degrees will not be allowed in. Hand sanitizing stations are available throughout the resort. Face masks are not be required but will be offered to guests.

The Island Resort and Casino will break ground in June on a $30 million construction project to add 100 new hotel rooms, an upscale restaurant, a pool and water park, and convention/meeting space. Construction will take about 12 months to complete.
Here is a description of the project from the press release of the Hannahville Indian Community:
'The Hannahville Indian Community Tribal Council approved a $30 Million expansion of the Island Resort and Casino to include over 100 hotel rooms. In response to high customer demand, the addition is to be connected to the south end of the current eleven (11) story Palm Tower complete with three (3) guest elevators and lobby. A high end dining venue, as well as convention space is planned for the top floor. The expansion also includes a pool with water park features for kids and young adults under 18.'
